The drive to Dale Head Hall is supposed to be haunted because of the murder of a man who was murdered after being waylaid on his way home from a drinking session at the King’s Head Inn. However it’s not the victim who haunts the place but the alleged murderer. After the crime, the local villagers turned against a man whom they were sure had done the deed. He protested his innocence, but was forced to flee. He went up to Patterdale and lived the rest of his short life in the caves up there but after his death his spirit came back to the spot of the murder to protest his innocence.

The only apparition that has been recorded relates to that of a young girl who visits guests in the old part of the house (Rooms 6, 7 and 8)

In Room 7, as in the other older rooms, there are deep inglenooks at the side of the chimney breast. These were used for various purposes such as smoking ham or drying clothes. Room 7’s tradition is that it was the cradle room and from these inglenooks the figure of a young girl comes out.
